I have a client who is purchasing a Dobe pup and he refers to crop the ears. I suggested he wait til the pup is 10 weeks old and let me take him to the specialist here in Dallas, but he already planned the trip when the pup is 8 weeks old and doesn't want to wiat or delay his trip. I know of a specislaist in Phoenix, but that's too far away. Does anyone know a vet in Albuqueuqe that crops ears? And no lectures from the animal rights crowd please. To each his own. Technology has made this a relatively pain free procedure.
I think he should just listen to you and wait until you can have your vet do it. I'm all for cropping, but IMO you have to be willing to travel if you want it done. I would never let just anyone do it. Have you checked out any Doberman clubs in the area?
Yes, it seems that New Mexico isn't the Doberman capital of the world. He did get in touch with a Doberman club and they referred him to a vet.....Hope it turns out Ok for him....Thanks for your response
I had a dobe twenty-five years ago. She had her ears done at 9 weeks of age. She was put under for the surgery. She and her brother were up and playing within a few hours, like nothing had happened. Neither had any problems. They healed beautifully and stood great. IMHO most of the problems occur from poor taping and posting. You also have to make sure a growing pup gets enough calcium in their diet while training the ears to stand. My little girl loved cottage cheese. Wish I'd had a digital camera then. *sigh*
Umm ya I would be against that too, any breeder I know that shows cropped dogs have them done by vets under anesthetic. They dont usually do them until after 8 weeks but before 12, depending on the breed, as LPN said some breeds can be done up to a year.
