My little chihuahua is 60 days pregnant today she is due April 7, 2009. I have been taking her temp for the past few days. And 9 out of 10 times it is 98's in the morning and high 99 to low 100 at night. Well this morning her temp was 98.8 and she has been acting weird all day she has been sleeping a lot and not eating like normal also she was licking her vulva this morning i have not seen her do that before. She is not panting or anything and you can't see her having contractions it's just the eating ad sleeping. Do you think she is getting close? Also her puppies have moved closer to her rear you can see the kicking around when she lays down.I have had puppies before but that has been a few years back and i am so nervous. I have already got her box and supplies together for when it is time. What do you all think are we getting close??
Sounds pretty close to me, she might have lost her mucus plug, I would watch her close, Do you have a vet on had? they tend to have some difficulty with delivery at time's as with most small breeds..Good Luck let us know how it goes ..
Always trust your dogs instinct about ppl it is always right..
If she is down to 98.8, she will have them within 24yrs. Just make sure that everything is set. I would wake up every couple of hours tonight just to check on her. Also if she has heavy pushing for more then 2hours without a puppy, go to an emerg. vet. She will probably need a c-section. Good luck
Thanks for everyone's reply. She still has not had any pups and her temp is back up in the 99's now she is due in 2 days ad showing no sign of labor yet but still not eating she has nibbled at some food but nothing like normal. I know she will start when it is time i just want to be prepared. She is just laying around today on the couch you can tell she is uncomfortable but not panting or whimpering i don't notice any contractions. I will update everyone when they arrive. Thanks again
Your dog will also start nesting about 24 hours before she delivers. We just had a litter of miniature schnauzers and our female was very intent on scratching at the furniture cushions and carpet the evening before she delivered.
I have also heard that most chihuahuas will require a c-section as they have been bred so small and will have problems delivering.
Make sure you have a 24-hour vet available.
Another option is to get the mother xray'd. They will be able to tell you how many puppies to expect and they can also measure the size of the puppies heads and the opening of the mother's pelvis to tell if she should be able to deliver naturally or not.
Congrats on your litter. I hope all goes well from here. WOW what a big litter for such a little girl. Enjoy watching them grow, it seems to go by so fast. My little guys just turned 5wks, I cant belive it.
