Can anyone give me some advice on special foods to feed my dog that just gave birth to four puppies? Also any advice about when to give start giving them solid foods. I am new at this, I just got her about a week ago from a person that didn't want her or the puppies.
If you already feeding a high-quality dog food, you should not have to switch her food. Otherwise, you should consider feeding the mother puppy food as it offers more calories. She will need the extra calories while nursing the puppies.
You can also feed her a high protein grain free food, like Orijen, or Evo. I usually add cottage cheese, eggs and yoghurt to my lactating female's diets. You will notice the dam hopping out of the puppy pen, when she wants to start weaning the pups. Depending on the breed, this could be around 3 weeks of age, for the puppies. What breed do you have?
When my bitches whelp, I give them a soft diet the first few days so they can eliminate with less discomfort (right, all the moms out there? Those insides are a bit tender) By soft I mean, canned food mixed with kibble, or add some water to soften the food up a bit.. What goes in soft, comes out soft.
when my dog is expecting I give her a high quality dog food as well as puppy replacement formula. I follow the instructions on the back of the container she loves it and it helps give her extra nutrients. I start giving my puppies wet food about 7 - 8 weeks old I also add a little bit of puppy formula in the wet food.
