Wolf hybrid nonsense
I cant believe some people would jumped so quickly to blame the dogs!

so i have to say i am new to this site and just finished reading a topic about wolf hybrids. i was amazed to see how quickly people jumped to the conclusion that because they are part wolf, they are dangerous. Well i have to say to all those complaining about this breed, it is so easy to judge what you dont know. i have had an 80% timber wolf hybrid for 5 years now. i have a 1 and a half year old daughter and 3 pure bred german shepherds. out of all the dogs i have, my wolf is the most loyal and obedient.he has never once showed aggression toward family, other dogs or even strangers and i have never seen a dog behave so well around children. what people dont understand, is that the cause for any bad behavior from these animals is not caused by instinct or by their own judgement. it is unfortunetly, the human they are raised by. so many people these days expect that getting a dog should be easy and convenient and i am here to tell you that is so wrong. Every dog is different and has its own needs but every dog needs a chance to be socialized properly. No matter what their breed.Wolf hybrids are not more dangerous or unpredictable than any other dog on this planet if it is taught properly from the beginning and socialized properly. people who dont have the time to socialize these animals properly are usually the ones who end up with someone getting hurt all because they thought the dog was pretty or ect.. Its not the dog, its the person. Put any dog with a neglectful person and any breed will act at will. i love my dogs and i hope that any person that has seen or heard about these dogs being monsters has not come to judge them so quickly. it is the owner that should be scolded not the dog

I, too, had a wolf hybrid for many years. Sadly he went to the Bridge about 5 years ago. He was one of the best dogs I've ever had. He was gentle and loyal and a wonderful companion. They are not for everyone - but no dog is. New once in all the years that he was with me did I ever fear for my safety or the safety of anyone else in the household.

Like other breeds, they are too often maligned.

Those of us who love pit bulls, also feel this way. I personally love both the wolves, and the pits. I have always wanted a wolf hybrid, but I don't have the time nor do I live in state that allows them. So everyone who has them enjoy them for me, and we all wish people would research before purchase

Yeah I have had many hybrids and they were the most loving and smartest dogs I have ever had. I had a 3/4 timberwolf 1/4 husky mix named smokey, he stood 6 ft high on his hid legs and weighted 175lbs and that nonsense about them hurting kids is not true. The first little kid he knew was a two year old that was pulling his hair and hitting him and jumping all over him and he didnt mind at all when he got irritated he would just bump into her and knock her over. Actually one time he grabbed her by her full-body pjs and packed her over to the corner and was trying to feed her dog food. He thought it was his pup lol. They are just big teddy bears.

I am no math wiz, so can someone explain how you get an 80% mix?

With no real registry, how do you really know it is a true wolf mix? I heard that breeders will often boast about a high wolf ratio to make their pups more attractive, when in reality, it is actually a malamute or a husky mix. this would explain the so called "wolf hybrids" that make great pets.

If I seem to have a superiority complex, it is because you make it so easy.

There was a woman here who would brag about her malamute wolf crosses, if anyone looked you could clearly see that they were malamute crossed with samoyed, some people only care about bragging rights.

I actually find that fact comforting. My problem with wolf hybrids is not that they are dangerous, but that it's cruel to keep wild, or part wild, animals as pets. Dogs have been domesticated for thousands of years, wolves haven't. They belong in the wild, and not trapped in a backyard or living room. I do have respect for the responsible owners who open their home up to those in need, though. I just don't think they should be bred. I honestly don't see any link between wolf hybrids and pitbull b/c the pitbull is a completely domesticated breed of dog.

I still think 95% o0f the wolf hybrids out there are not anything but a shepherd/husky/akita/mix.

There are people around me who breed real hybrids. And they end up in the pound and killing animals all the time. Of course its not their fault-its just that most regular pet owners are not equipped.

People always jump up and say 15 yrs ago I had one and it was great-take it a little to personal. Things are different now. Our pound automatically puts them down. The shepherd they used to be mixed with isn't so stable. Its a mess and there is no good reason to do it. Yes there are exceptions to both the mix and owners but not often enough.

Joce, you bring up an excellent point. I never thought about there being a problem with the breeds they are crossing the wolves with, but that makes perfect sense. There have been several cases of GSD attacks in my area. There are many irresponsible dog owners in my area and I suspect many of the offending dogs came from a similar bloodline (from a BYB or the local Shepherd mill).

Wolf hybrids are dangerous. They are illegal to own where I live because of their wildness and their unpredictability. A true wolf hybrid is a dangerous animal! The wild instincts will crowd out the domestic ones of the dog every time. It is very easy to pick out a true wolf hybrid if you see it. ALL wolf hybrids I have seen slink around low to the ground when they don't want you to see them. My mother used to have one and she hadn't wanted it.my brother bought it and left her at my mother's house. When she matured she began to act like a wolf and my brother was told to put her down. I like all dog breeds but a wolf is not a dog, but a wild animal. A true wolf hybrid is NOT trainable. Anyone who says they have a trained wolf hybrid has a "fake" one-actually a dog breed cross. A wolf hybrid is even more dangerous than a true wolf, because the hybrid isn't as fearful of humans as a true wolf. Even a tiny bit of wolf blood makes it a wild animal.

Oh and another thing is when you give a wolf hybrid a rabies shot, the shot doesn't always take, but there's noway to tell unless it actually gets rabies.

Not all true wolf hybrids are dangerous. Some yes can be, there are two differnet personalities of wolf dogs. Some shy away from people and some love their people and feel the need to protect them. And yes we did domesticate wolves in our history. The natives here domesticated them, and I believe that most maybe all dogs could've evloved from wolves or something to that matter. The stories that you hear are from owners not knowing how to take care of their pets and neglecting them, dogs take a lot of time and patience, people can't just expect them to learn on their own. People that don't work with their hybrids are the ones that should be blamed not the dog. If people don't work with them, then their natural instinct kicks in, but you can train them to be a normal functioning pet like any other dog.

Dogs did not evolve from wolves. and yes, all wolf hybrids are dangerous. They are wild animals. they are very confused wild animals.

People are stupid. DON'T MUCK WITH WILD THINGS! i have seen wolf hybrids that did love their people as pups, hit maturity and bam! every one of them attacked the owner or owner's family. And some of these people were very knowledgeable about dogs. No one should own a wolf hybrid.People did NOT domesticate wolves, that's simply a fabricated story.

People are so stupid sometimes, just because the dog looks scary and mean doesn't mean that he is. I had a wolf hybrid that was 96% wolf, i had him from 9 yrs till recently till he had to be put down due to an accident, he was the sweets and smarts dog we had, he was never mean or aggresive to anyone, if he didn't know the person he would stand in the distance and watch them to make sure they did nothing wrong, he was no more aggresive than our lab we have. He loved to be loved on and never once turned on me or any of our famliy members. So before u judge them educate yourself first, dont judge a book before u read it.

How do you get a 96% wolf?! Chances are you had a mix of husky/akita/shepherd/malamute.

The guy I know who breeds them(very irresponsibly) says its a joke if they are throwing percentages around.

And most hybrids are not the pretty husky mix looking dogs. They are kinda ugly. Lanky and akward looking.

How the sweet bloody frig do you decide your dog is 96% something??? I have a mastiff rotty mix, who looks more mastiff, so I am going to say he is 96% mastiff and only got 4% of the rotty genetics, because thats totally how genetics work, .

Three weeks ago I put down the last of my father's wolf hybrids. For over 50 years I have been around these animals so I guess I do have the right to speak with knowledge. I personally would NEVER own one of these dogs. Every one my dad owned bit people including my father. My mom and I are the only ones that were never bitten. I was the one who took them to the vet and trimmed their nails and did any treating of wounds, etc.If a vet can look in the mouth of a wolf hybrid and if there is a high percentage of wolf blood, the teeth are very different from those of a domestic dog there are also some other physical differences. In the county where I live, a special permit is required that costs $400 per animal. The conditions for acquiring the permit require spay/neuter and the animal must be confined in a fenced enclosure at all times. These are very unpredictable and dangerous dogs and should never be considered true pets. My dad died in June of 2007 and I had to wrestle Thumper into the garage so the people from the mortuary could safely enter the house. As Thumper's health deteriated he became more agressive until I was actually beginning to worry about my mother's safety. Thank God I have a wonderful vet who came to the house and gave Thumper the injection while I held him.I loved Thumper a lot but I am so glad I will not have to ever deal with a wolf hybrid again.

I think I figured it out.

If each parent contributes 50% genetically, then each grandparent contributes 25%. Following that logic, if you go back 8 generations, each animal in the tree contributes 0.390625%. That means that if 10 out of the 256 animals in the dog's eight generation pedigree were domestic dogs, that would mean that animal was 10 x 0.390625 = 3.90625% "dog," or 100 - 3.90625 = 96.09375% wolf.
