I'm planning on getting standard poodle in a couple of years and want to find a good reputable breeder with all the right health checks, spay or neuter contract and the activities they do to prove their dogs.
I found some who seem to fit those criteria according to their websites, but I'm finding a lot of them are pricing their dogs in a way that what seems to me.... wrong?
Many of these breeders price their dogs differently based on their colors. Generally black the cheapest, white and cream more, red and brown even more. Partis and others weird colors even even more.
I don't really care about what color my future dog will be but I don't want to support a breeder that price them differently like that. It just sounds wrong to me! Breeding a phantom color poodle shouldn't be more expensive then a solid colored one. And it's not like poodles don't have diseases or temperament problems associated with their colors like albino dogs.
Is this type of pricing system an acceptable trait for reputable breeders?
I would understand if the breeder is out to make a profit because then the supply and demand mentality is there. Many people would pay more for an interesting color. These are not the type of breeders I want a pup from.
But many of these "who seem reputable" breeders that I found spend money/time on all the health tests and showing/obedience/field. They also talk about how much they love their breed and don't make a profit from them and say the breeders that do are evil.
I'm wondering if other reputable breeder from other breeds does the same thing. I understand with pricing a pup lower when the color is unacceptable in the breed. But this is not to be the case in the poodle world.
I emailed some of the breeders and they came back to me saying that blacks are harder to sell. Honestly if they have to price their pups lower in order to sell them maybe they shouldn't be breeding......
Am I being unreasonable? Anyone can help me understand this? I could just get a rescue but I want a health guaranteed dog if it's possible.

unfortunetly, you wont find any good breeder who isnt going to play the pricing game with this particular breed, or any breed for that matter. its all about the rarest and of course the more rare it is, the more expensive it becomes. To be honest, you probably wont find a breeder with good credentials that isnt going to do this. It is rediculous that people can do this to dogs but if you wanr a healthy dog more than likely you will have to deal with the people that do these things. Black is one of the most common colors of the poodle and the breeder wont find very many prominant people willing to want something so common. breeders do these things because they know that so many people will pay the price to have something exotic so to speak. it is not at all fair to the dog or the people just wanting a dog to love and not to show off but they do it anyways. when i got my first husky he was 350 because he was traditional black and white but his brother because he was red and white was 200 dollars more!!!!! It is sad but if you want to make sure you have a healthy good dog you may end up dealing with this type of breeder. it stinks but they are also the ones who will more likely give you the healthier dog
Find a different breeder! If you PM me I would be willing to point you towards some good sites for finding a reputable poodle breeder.
I don't think that acceptable at all. I also don't think that "blacks are harder to sell." If anything they seem more popular, in poodles anyway. I would be suspect of any breeder that has all those colors. Most have like two or three colors. One will have black, white and cream. Another will have creams, reds and browns.
Partis and Phantoms are a tricky subject. They aren't accepted by the AKC, but they are by the UKC (United Kennel Club). Unless a breeder shows in the UKC, I would be suspicious of them having partis. They definately shouldn't be asking more for them. I personally think it's harder to find a good parti pup b/c of this reason. Unless you have your heart set on a Parti or Phantom, I would stick to the AKC breeders. If they breed to the AKC standard, they shouldn't have partis very often. When they do, they would actually sell them cheaper b/c it's considered a fault.
I don't think it is unreasonable. My boss used to breed poodles. Price is often set at what people want, and how hard it is to get. Nice looking Reds are hard to find, chocolate is also ressive, so again should be more expensive. Black, white, cream are dominate, so that are usually priced lower, more of them in a litter. I know a lady in Pa, that bred red to red, and got a litter of all black but one. Both parents had a black parent, so the black came out. I don't think someone who prices their dogs more for color or what people want is an issue.
Those of you who do, don't ever get an Aussie
In my breed(mini Aussies/reg. aussies) sex and color, as well as eye color play a hugh factor in price. Everyone wants a blue merle female with blue eyes, you you pay for it. Most people don't want a tri or bi colored male, so they are cheaper. It doesn't mean we are bad people.
IMHO--go with a breeder who breeds on certain recognized colors, I love parties, (personally think they healthier), but it is hard to find a reputable breeder who has parties. If the breed every color, I worry about that also. I also don't trust those who breed every size. As long as the health testing is done, and I firmly belive is showing of some sort, lastly go visit if you can. Even a cheap plane ticket is better then an unhealthy puppy.
