I recently bought a newer townhouse that is approximately 1200 sqft with a decent size yard for a midsized dog to run around.
I'm looking for any suggestions on what type of dog would be good for the suburbs of Chicago. I'm looking for a dog that has some energy, but not too much. A dog that will be obedient and listen to my commands. He must be able to go for walks at night and stay home during the day as I work.
If there won't be anyone to let the it out during the day, I would suggest a dog that is old enough to hold it for that length of time, instead of a puppy. I feel so bad for puppies that have to stay in a crate all day waiting to relieve themselves. I work from home and still feel bad if I have to leave for a few hours if I have a puppy. But....lots of people leave puppies home all day, then wonder why they still go to the bathroom in their crates many months later. When we had large breed puppies in the past, we lived in an area where we had a huge fenced yard and a doggie door from the basement. That worked out really well. But since you live in a townhouse I realize that that wouldn't work out for you. Is the yard area fenced? I'm sure that there are many different breeds that would suit you.
