Does anyone have any advice for how to get a dog to sleep throughout the night? My girlfriend recently moved into my house and my dog sleeps on a dog bed at the foot of our bed. Before she moved in when she would come over my dog slept through the night and. I know she can sleep all through the night because she does it when my girlfriend is not at the house. We are moving to a 2nd floor apartment and neither of us want to continue being woken up 2 or 3 times a night by the dog either wanting to go out or just walking around.
Sounds like your dog might be jelous[misspelled] of your girlfreind being there all the time. Try giving your dog some extra attention and a long walk or playing ball a while before bedtime to try to tire the dog out. If the dog continues crate the dog at night for a while. Good luck.
SUE - that's a new one to me. Maybe jealousy is the wrong word, but I have frequently seen behavioral problems in dogs and cats when a new member is brought into the mix - whether it has 2 legs or 4. There are training tips in books and video that help owners overcome jealousy issues with their pets. Whatever you want to call this behavior, it sounds like your dog isn't accepting this new addition yet. Try having her take over as much of the care as possible. Feed her; take her for walks, give her a bath, etc. Try to create some opportunities for bonding to take place between the two. She's really ever known you, right? Maybe she just needs more time.
Jealousy, whatever, threatened and jealousy can be the same thing in the dog world. Try to stick to a routine, make sure your girlfriend goes with you on walks, crate the dog at the same time every night and take him out same time every morning. Someone new to the pack always takes time.
