Hi everyone! I adopted a dachshund/cockerspaniel mix a couple of weeks ago and have brought him to the dog park almost everyday since. He's always been very friendly and happy to meet new people and animals. Today we were at the dog park for a few hours, he was having fun playing with all the other pups. A chihuahua showed up and started barking before he got into the park. A few of the other dogs ran up to the fence and started barking. My dog then raced over and got really aggressive with the chihuahua. They started fighting and I took my dog to the other side of the park. The chihuahua followed and they started to fight again. I took my dog home, but I'm confused by his violent reaction to this dog. I have 3 cats and he's never been violent towards them, even when they get violent with him. There were about 15 other dogs at the park at the time, and he was happily playing with all of them until the other dog showed up. Anyone have any ideas on what might have set him off so I can prevent it from happening again?
Dogs are just like us, we can't like everybody. That dog might be alfa and your dog could have sensed that before he came in and wanted to dominate. I really don't know dog phscology and behavior that much, but I hope this gives you some idea why he might do this.
Shelties: Not enough words to describe how much I love them.
I'll probaly get flamed for this, but Chihuahuas seem to be very aggressive dogs. The like to push around other dogs and even pick fights. From what you describe, the Chi was acting aggressive before it even got inside the park. That owner is taking a big risk by bringing it there. I've met several Pitbulls and never had a problem, but I've been bitten by Chis twice. I've lost count of all the times they've tried to start stuff with my dogs. Unfortunately most Chihuahua breeders care about getting tiny dogs and/or unique coloring, so their temperment has gone to heck.
Like some people, there are dogs that do not have good social skills (with other dogs). Perhaps this dog that you refer to is one of those dogs and the other dogs including yours were picking up on his "bad vibe".
