I recently acquired a 6 week old puppy. She was accidentally given 2 puppy vaccinations within a few days apart. Does anyone know if there are negative effects that could occur from vaccinations this close together.
What breed of puppy is it? 6 weeks is the earliest I would ever suggest giving a puppy a vaccination. Small breeds need to wait until a minimum of 8 weeks. But, if the puppy was already weaned, he needed the protection. Occasioanlly, if the shots are given to a pupy that is too young (under 6 weeks), then the shots actually provide no protection.
Well, the second vaccination will do absolutely no good. So, this vaccine will need to be repeated. They need to be at a minimum 2 weeks apart. I like to go about 3 - 4 weeks in between DHLPP shots.
Fortunately, side effects of "puppy shots" are pretty rare, and getting a second dose probably won't do any harm, but it certainly won't do any good that close together.
I would suggest waiting until the puppy is 10 weeks old, then start him on a new vaccination schedule, 3 DHLPP shots 3 weeks apart. It won't hurt him to have extra, but it can be bad if the first shot was ineffective and he isn't fully protected.
BTW - 6 weeks is too young for a puppy to leave it's mother. In a lot of states, it's illegal to sell a puppy under 8 weeks old. I don't know the situation as to how you got the puppy, but if you bought the puppy from someone, I wouldn't ever buy a puppy from that place again.
