we have a yellow lab that is about 20 months old. He was diagnosed with food allergies about 3 months ago and put on a salmon based dog food. The licking and itching has pretty much stopped which is great. The skin on his legs, chest and spots on his belly have started to get darker -- almost like parts of skin are turning black. Has anyone else ever had this happen? Any ideas what it may be from?
Sometimes when skin turns black or dark gray it's referred to as elephant skin. This is not normal. It is usually a sign of a deficiency. And, it usually comes about in conjunction with other skin issues, excessive shedding, baldness, itching, etc.
When my dog had this, plus other things going on...like the chronic yeast in the ears and on the skin, we used a few things that worked together to actually solve the underlying problem. It didn't just work on the symptoms.
We started our dog on a higher quality meat based dog food. We found several that worked. Look for one that has more meat than grain. You will have to look at the ingredient list. The ingredients are listed in order of the most to the least contained in the food.
Then we added a product called Carnoyum. It's a really good supplement that has vitamins and probiotics and other things in it. It comes with another tube of liquid that you use with it. We just put it on the dog food.
Don't change your dog's food and add other things all at the same time or you will end up with all kinds of problems that are hard to clean out of your carpet! So try a new food for a few weeks, then try adding other things slowly.
After about 3 weeks, my dog's yeast was gone. No stinky skin. No ear problems. This was a miracle because my dog had ear problems from the time he was very little. Then in about a month, the hair started to grow back in the bald areas and in about 3 molnths, the elephant skin was going away. I had used just about every medicine known to vets and had depleted my bank account trying to get my dog better.
Now we use the vitamins and liquid every day. I think it's been almost a year. And, my dog has hair and it's shiny and pretty. And, he doesn't stink so my husband will even let him in the house now!
We actually have my dog's vitamins sent to the house automatically now. It's every 10 weeks we get a shipment automatically. I won't go without it! I'm so glad that we found a way to help my dog before we went broke. I think it costs about $20 a month to keep him from being bald, itchy and stinky. Well worth it!
Best of luck with your dog(s). They are so good to us, they deserve the best from us!
