We have recently adopted a golden retriever who is great but has a fear of my digital camera. I thought it was the flash so we turned it off and he is still afraid. When we hold the camera up to take his picture he puts his head down and walks away like he is punished.... Any thoughts????
Dogs relies heavily on reading body language and facial expressions. if you suddenly block its view of your face and eyes with the camera, that may throw it off and confuse it since it can't "read" you anymore. try to aim the camera with out raising it in front of your face.
also, some cameras have sensors that omit red light to detect and track faces, movement distances and various other things. those lights that are not usually visible to you from your point of view, might scare your dog when it is directed at its face.
If I seem to have a superiority complex, it is because you make it so easy.
I am pretty sure the digital cameras give off some sort of high frequency sound. (much like how TVs make that high frequency sound that drive most people CRAZY even though the TV is on mute in another room.)
my pup is VERY afraid of cameras. it has gotten to the point where I can not even reach for the camera. it is very sad.
