We just adopted a three year old unspayed female Pom. She lived in a third floor apartment in Boston and was left alone 12 to 14 hours a day. We are unclear as to what her eating habits were but when we got her two weeks ago she was hungery and very courious about everything. We have three cats and the Pom loves the cat food dry and wet we try to keep it away but are not always sucsesful she has chewed up an entire pig ear and was eating well until Sunday night the 24th. Monday morning she had vomit, formed poop and urinated alot in her bedding area.The vomit was the color of the food she ate the night before My first thought was I fed her too much. I also think the food is wrong for her so I've switched to puppy kibble and bits no chews and no treats or people food. Day two she is still vomiting yellowish bile and trying to eat grass and her movments are thickish and black I'm not sure if there is blood because the food she was eating is the same color. She is drinking water and is very quiet and sleepy but is easily arroused to go for a walk or ride in the car. Should I be alarmed at this point or wait and see if she has just over indulged. thank you Unsure and Concerned
Personally I wouldn't feed kibbles and bits to anything living. I chose only quality foods such as Innova, Merrick, blue diamond, etc. I would have a vet check on her just in case there is anything really going on. I also do feed any treats that are not made in the USA. Alot of foods and treats from china are made with all kinds of chemicals (remember the recalls several years ago).
My guess is she is just getting used to her new surrondings, and new food. Put the cat food up where the cat can get it, but not the dog. A table or counter usually works great.
MY POM WENT IN WHEN SHE WAS 8 MONTHS OLD WHILE THEY WERE HAVING THE DOG FOOD CRUNCH RECALL FOR THIS PROB. THEY DID EXTENSIVE TEST ON HER. RESULTS SHOWED SHE WAS ELERGIC TO THE CONTENT OF 90% CAN FOOD.THEY KEPT HER A FEW DAYS SHE WAS DEHRIDED & ON A IV. SINCE THEN I ONLY BUY HER CHICKEN GIZZARDS .THEY ARE CHEAP $1.00 OR 2 AND LAST ALL WEEK . I CUT THEM UP INTO TINY CHUNKS AFTER I BOIL THEM.PROBLEM SOLVED FOR 4 YRS NOW.DRY FOOD ONLY IS A HAND FULL OF IMAS MICRO MINI CHUNKS ONLY.ANY OTHER NUGGET IS TOO BIG & SCRAPES HER INTENSTVIE WALL LINING AND VOMIT STARTS. THEY HAVE TINY MOUTHS TO CHEW WITH AND ANYTHING BIGGER IS A RISK.SO SOMETIMES I USE A LIL CAESARS WITH HER ONLY CHICKEN & TURKEY NO GRAVY ONES . SHE WILL GET THE RUNS. ALSO THE BEEF ONES OR LAMB. I ONLY BUY THE CHICKEN & TURKEY;
IF MY POM GET SICK LIKE THEY USALLY DO FROM THE RUNS I GIVE HER A TEA SPOON OF KALPECTATE FROM THE PHARMACY. IF NOT DRINKING I KEEP A BOX OF THE FROZEN COOL POPS IN THE REFRIG & CUT ONE OPEN. I LAY ON THE FLOOR WITH IT SHE COMES RUNNING. I SHARE IT WITH HER. I TRY TO SUCK MOST THE JUICE OUT BECAUSE IT'S SUGAR. SHE LOVES THEM AND AT THE SAME TIME IT'S ONLY ICE AND SHE'S GETTING THE FLUIDS IN HER. ALSO... I THROW DOWN A ICE CUBE AND SHE PLAYS WITH IT , LICKING IT TIL IT'S GONE. JUST BE CREATIVE AFTER YOU SEE THE VET.
