i currently have a male german shepherd that i got from the local blue cross rescue centre,he is a very good natured dog and seems to get on with most dogs,we have had him nearly a year now and think he is about 2 1/2 years old,we are looking at getting a female puppy very soon and i was just wondering if they will interact ok,imho i cant see why there should be any problems but would like a few other peoples opinions
My last dog was a German Shepard and at 7 years old, not by my choice, my fiance' brought his cat to live with us- after all it was his pet and the dog hated cats-but got used to this cat- we had to watch them to make sure they knew each others boundries and they worked it out- I am not sure how you will make out with another dog- but if the shepard is socialized with other dogs- you should be fine- not a lot of help - but Good Luck!
German Shepherds are very social animals. As long as you introduce the new puppy slowly they should get along just fine. It is actually better to add a puppy rather than an older dog as the puppy will learn from the older one. Also, the older dog does not feel as threatened by the new arrival when it is a puppy. If you get a female make certain to have her spayed since your older dog is a rescue. Even when they have been neutered, they can often get rowdy when a female around them is in heat.
We are a small family farm that specializes in only White German Shepherds. Our beautiful girls and boys a
I have a 9 month old male german shepard I introduced to my brother's 4 year old female... they got along great from the start. My brother's female is very social to begin with and my dog just wanted to play, so we never had any problems. Good luck!
I agree with the comment about getting a female dog spayed with a German Shepherd. I too have a male German Shepherd who is neutered and we just recently introduced our new edition to him, she's got an appointment to get fixed but she hit her heat cycle and now he's almost gone completely retarded...LOLJ/K But seriously, he almost seems like he's a totally different dog sometimes.
Maybe someone in here can help me out. I have a german shep mix pup from the shelter. She's about 4 months old. The issue is biting. I've gotten over the chewing all my furniture, shoes..blah blah. But she has a habit of biting anyone who tries to pet her or even play with her. In no way is she being mean or aggressive. It almost seems like that's her way of playing. I've had one person tell me to put "bitter apple" on my fingers and put it in her month. To me, this sounds pointless--but i'm willing to hear solutions from those who have gone through the same thing.
All puppies go through that stage, that is how they play with each other, they can't talk so they use their mouths intead. You can try the bitter apple, that could help. What I did with mine is, eveytime she goes to bite, I make a high pitched screaming sound, and say NO, and turn your back for a few minutes. Puppies love to play and will do anything for your attention, and this hurts their feelings, so everytime you do this, they will eventually learn the word NO, and will know that biting means no playtime.
I did the same thing with my male when he was a pup. He used to bite so I would let a squeal out and so no and he eventually stopped. One thing I noticed about German Shepherds, they are really smart and catch onto things very quickly. I know mine did.
If you can introduce the two ( at some place othe than your home) before you buy your Female. If they get along GRRRREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If not it probably would'nt be a good idea to get her. Hope this helps.
