Just joined this site, and happened along when this breed was in the 'spotlight' It had recorded a life expectancy of 6 to 8 years?? Would the people in the know about BMDs out there confirm or refute this? I am a breeder of Labradors, and have been considering adding this breed to my kennel for a couple of years, but have never come across any literature that gives their lifespan as being so short!! This really concerns me, as I am used to a breed that lives 12 to 15 years, and I cannot understand why the life expectancy of the BMD should be so different to a Lab? I would appreciate any [scientific] information on this as well.
Yes, they are a short-lived breed. A 10 year old bern is an old bern! Also, there are many health concerns-hip and elbow dysplasia, cancer, bloat, orthopedic problems. We have friends with a bern, though, and she is just a lovely dog!
We have several clients with berns, and even well bred ones have health problems. One women loves the breed, and every one she has had, has had some sort of problem. We also have a women who shows and breeds them, she went through several before finding a nice show dog, with no bone chips worth breeding. They are are hard breed to ensure health on. But the good ones are amazing.
All the ones we have bathed or groomed have died before the age of 9yrs
