I'm scheduled to leave the Army within the next two weeks and about to move back to my hometown in Mississippi with my girlfriend. My parents and I are from Mississippi as well and noticed that there aren't very many breeders in the area. My girlfriend and I have looked at all breeds and found that we both agreed on the doberman. Its such a majestic, regal looking dog and we would really like to raise a puppy together. We both have experience raising dogs but never the doberman. I did have a Feist Terrier at one time, very very intelligent dog. He was very friendly and a great childhood companion. I believe the reason behind his abnormal intelligence and friendly nature was the amount of time I spent with him. I would really like to have that type personality in our dobie, however, my girlfriend and I are not children anymore and have jobs to put the Kibble in the bowl. I'm afraid we'll have no choice but to leave the pup alone at the house for a certain amount of time until one of us comes home to walk and play with him each day or evening depending on our schedules. How much time alone is too much time alone? Does anyone know of a breeder located in mississippi? Any suggestions to remedy the situation would be greatly appreciated.
Leaving the pup in the house during working hours can be easy. An x-pen is wonderful. It give the pup confinement, and still room to potty on paper, food and water. Dobies are very energetic, and require alot of excersize. Probably a great running buddy. The bigger concern I would have is if you are going in the military, and have to move where would the dog go? There are so many dogs taken to shelters, or in need of homes becuase someone is in the military, and has to move or be deported. The dog cant go. That needs to be a huge consideration when taking on the pet.
Everything else is really up to you and how much time you have to spend with the dog. Any working dog needs a job, and lots of play time.
