I have a very energetic life style. I run four times a week, five miles every time. I live right next to a dog park. I have a med-sized yard. The puppy would definitly be inside with me at all times, and outside for a lot of play and excersize. I have read through several dog books, and since I don't have a larger yard, I have decided not to get a large dog. So I've looked over smaller and medium sized dogs, and have settled between two dogs: Scottish Terrier and the Schnauzer. I just can't figure out which would better suit my life style. Please help!
I agree I don't think those dogs could do 5 miles at a time, but ya never know. If you're that active you might want a high energy breed like a Border Collie, they aren't too big, or maybe even a Greyhound, they run a lot. Or you might just wanna go to your local shelter and adopt a high energy mutt, he could be the best running partner you could find, and you get to give a dog a home.
Shelties: Not enough words to describe how much I love them.
A std or giant Schn. might be good, but I think you are going to need a larger working dog. Not a smaller one. If you run that much, you need something that can go the distance. Working dogs like labs, springers, brittanys, Weims, etc. Are good. Herding breeds are great to The aussie(my fav. of course the mini aussie), border collies, shelties, Aus. cattle dogs, etc. If you can deal with the hair, shelties, mini aussies, aus. cattle dogs, springer and brittany's would make excellent choices.
Scotties have very short legs with heavy bodies, they will not be able to go the distance of a active life style. There are some great rare breeds also. Do a bit more research, and I think you will find there are much better breeds out there. Also try the shelter, you might find a med. sized mutt that will fill the void
