I am planning on spaying a 6 month old Aussie. The vet wants her tested for LYme's disease prior to her having the surgery. He plans on testing her the morning of her surgery. HE says that if she has Lyme's disease that she can bleed out during the procedure. CAn we get the lyme's result back in two hours? Is it true that lyme's disease causes hemorrhaging?
Lymes disease can cause all kinds of problems from nerological to organ failure. I would take the vets precaution. The other thing you need to test your aussie for is MDR-1. If it has not been done already. there are all kinds of medications it can be allergic to. Ivermectin is the big killer. Let me know if you need the link to get that test.
The results will be available almost immediatley. It is called an antigen test, it looks sort of like an at home pregnancy test where they simply take a blood sample, mix it with a solution and put some drops on it and wait a few minutes for the results to show up with 1 dot or 2 dots sort of results. 1 dot means one thing and 2 dots mean the other, cant remember which is which.
Thank You for the replies. I could not find anything in regards to hemorrhaging with Lyme's disease. I thought it strange to wait to test her the morning of her surgery. I have no problem having her tested. As for the gene mutation mdr1 I assume she has it. We had another aussie who got sick for days after taking heart guard. She became lethargic, off her food, and at times ataxic. I told the vet and they had no idea at the time the correlation between ivermectin and certain breeds. In fact, our first aussie had gained weight and they insisted we give her the higher dose heart guard. SHe had weighed in at 53 and insisted in order for it to be effective she needed this dose. Our dog was a mess within 24 hours after taking the dose. I stopped giving her the heart guard. Mind you this was back in 1999. I appreciate your help and the mdr1 warning. We were lucky not to lose our dog.
There are alot of Aussie's who don't have it, I got lucky so far with my breeding stock, not even a carrier. YEAH
Anyway I am not sure if everyone is aware of all the other drugs on the list that can cuase the same problems as Ivermectin. Most people only know about heart guard. There are some sedatives, anti-diarreah meds, tranq's, etc.
It is best to do research on it, as I can not post a link publicly. Enjoy your baby
