I've been wondering the same thing. I have a male sheltie who is 16 years old. I noticed that about two years ago, he progressively lost his hearing. I was told by our vet that was very common in older dogs and that nothing was wrong. What worries me are his eyes. I believe he might have cataracts or is totally blind. He has trouble using the stairs so I have blocked them so he can't go up. I am wondering is cataract surgery would be beneficial or not. Has anyone experienced anything like this?
Cataracts are typical in older dogs, just as people. While they can do surgeries to help improve the vision, due to this dogs age, I would not choose to do it. Anesthesia alone is a big enough risk for a 16 yr old dog to opt out of cataract surgery that will not be very effective at the advanced age.
