I got my kittens a few days ago. They are away from their mom so they are sucking on my dogs nipples. I have no clue what to do if you know what to do please tell me.

Sorry, I don't know what to do about that...but I did get a good chuckle from it...

Kittens will often nurse both male and female dogs if allowed. For an unspayed female this can cause false pregnancy. Even though this looks cute it isn't a good idea if kittens are old enough to be weaned. It is possible they were allowed to nurse their mother even up to the time you got them. You can use some sour apple spray on the underbelly of your dog, and tell you dog no every time you catch this action. If neccessary you can only allow them together when you can watch them to break the habit before it settles in too strongly. I have a dog who just raised Pittens, however these kittens had been abandond by their mother. Even though I supplimented with kitten milk, my momma developed milk, and treated these 2 as if she had given birth to them. You have never seen a more heartwarming sight than inter-spiecies love. It happens with kittens that are not fully weaned...likely were not completely off their mom before coming there.

I have a pic here of our spayed lab years ago allowing a litter of kittens we were fostering nurse from her too, lol.

I would be any money that they were taken away from the mother to soon. No kitten should be taken away before at least 8 wks. They may know how to eat on there own but they have not learned the other skills that the mother will teach them and one is weaning them from her.

It seems quite normal to me. Often in the wild , animals will take on another's young. As a Breeder, I have to agree, they were probably weaned to soon.It gave me a laugh also.smithhimmys@aol.com

i have two 6 month old cats... they were with their mom for 8 weeks.. when i got them both they would suck on eachother, stuffed animals, even my male dog. not on his nipples but his back and neck and he just lays there, i think he likes it. he does give them baths and acts like their mother. i gave up pulling them away i just let them.


now my brother on the other hand has a problem. he has to cats that are almost adults and he wakes up to one of them sucking on his nipples!.. true story.

I have a 12 week old kitten who I found abandoned at around 6 weeks. He wakes me up twice a night purring, kneeding and sucks on my neck. I have trouble pulling him away as he is obsessed with it. I do believe that this is from not having his mother around long enough, but I don't know what to do about it. As much as I love the affection, this mother needs her sleep! Any ideas?

this is a cute storyy... my brother loves animalls.. there was a stray cat that kept having kittens in my moms barn after the first liter my mom said okay when they are old enough i will get them all fixed and they can be barn cats.. she knos how the shelters are filled with cats over filled most of the time. well when they were old enough they were scared of people but my mom still fed them and once they got use to people she got them fixed. catching the mom was very hard she has another liter and it was all females and the same thing had happend. so we waited and got them all fixed. so then there was 7 cats but we have 9 acres and a big warm barn and they were healthy with there shots and always wormed and all that i dont want my mom to sound like a crazy cat person she is a big animal lover. then a cat had kittens but we didnt no about it, it must of been in the woods so we saw them when they were older. and they were scared of people but still came around so it started to get out of hand so once she got them she fixed them and found them good homes.. on of the cats has 6 babys so they were not to young but it was b4 6 weeks my mom wanted to take them b4 it was to late so my brother and my mom took turns feeding them and taking care of them so there was no more accidents and they found them homes when they were old enough and fixed of course.. but my brother kept two. they think he is the mother.... when he sleeeps he wakes up to them sucking on his nippples!! its gross but funny... i think they have stopped.. but thats funny the dog lets them lol.. mine to cats were with there mom full term and they suck on my blanket all the time and accually they use to suck on my dog.. not his nipples but his furr. i dont think there is anything you can do

Do the kittens have a mother?, if they do when they try to suck on your dog, try to stop it immediately but without harming the kitten. Keep this up until the kitten or kittens stop the behavior.
