I just got my six week old puppies tail docked. I know that it was suppose to be done within the first few days she was alive but the lady who i bought it from didn't know that. Therefore we got it done by the vet just a few days ago. Her little numb is bright pink but is not oozing or bleeding or anything.. I just started putting some neosporin on it to help it heal but was wondering if anyone else had any tips.. I was going to watch it for a few days and see if it gets worse and if it does call the vet!! any suggestion would be greatly appreciated!
Oh dear...first of all, 6 weeks is too young to be away from mom and littermates. In fact, where I live-it's illegal to sell a puppy that young.
And 2nd, I never would have had the tail docked at this point. So you have a boxer with a tail-so what? That's better than putting the poor pup through the pain of having it done now. I feel bad for the puppy to have to go through all of this (and surprised that your vet didn't talk you out of it)
I understand that she was too young but they were getting rid of them and it was either that or they were going to end up homeless.. I really need advice more than criticism for what i did.. she did fine in the surgery and had no problems and i have an excellent vet so i trust his decisions and support them 100%
take her back to your vet to be looked at, she may need an antibiotic and pain meds now.
That was competely irresponsible on both you and your vets part to put this poor pup through this. At 6 weeks, he had to cut through bone and nerves to amputate that tail...very cruel and shame on the vet for agreeing to do it.
The tail will also probably look goofy the rest of her life. I seen a weimaraner whose tail was amputated at 7 weeks, the extra skin that had to be sutured created a little ball of scar tissue on the end that always weighed the end of the tail down in an arch. It would never stick strait out the way a pointers should, it always drooped.
You've probably stopped reading this thread by now but in case you haven't I need to add my thoughts. The docking was unnecessary so PLEASE don't touch her ears! She's gone through enough at her tender age.
