I have a 3 year old dane that recently snapped at my 8 month old son and bit him. I know that I have to get rid of him but can't find anyone to take him. He is a member of our family and I can't see taking him to the vet to have him put down. He is a great dog and didn't try attacking my son I just think he was a little jealous and my son got in his space. He has never done anything like this before but my son is too little to be taking any chances. I've put an ad out but no one seems to want him so do u think I should put him down? I just don't think I would be able to do that. Anyone with any ideas?
You are right on several accounts, you can not take a chance with your son's safety and it is unusual for a Dane to be less than gentle with children unless they are snapping out of pain or fear (ear infection or undetected injury). I would say that the best thing to do would be to contact the Dane rescue, they have groups all over the country. http://www.greatdanerescueinc.com/ They wil take the pooch, temperament test him, make sure he's healthy and find an appropriate, loving forever home for him. Bear in mind, this is a "surrender" and you will not receive any money for him.
