I have a 10yo blue heeler. She has HW so she will go under treatment soon. Now, I need to put her on preventive but it's too expensive and really the prev entive mix is ivermectine + pyperazine. Anyone using ivermectine with success? If yes, how and how much? (Orally or subcutane? Thanks for your help!
This is a herding breed. My understanding is that you should not use Ivomec with herding breeds. Someone will correct me if I am wrong here. I have been using Ivomec for heartworm prevention for more than 10 years now. I have never injected it (only administered orally) and I have never mixed it with anything. Always just given it straight with some food. Check with someone on the herding breed aspect.
Best of luck!

yes a lot of breeds carry a gene that causes a toxic reaction to ivermectin. You should not use it, and if you want to do heartworm preventive use intercepter from you vet, nothing else. They are some wonderful sprays that help keep mosquitos away, but there is still a risk. Good luck with your dogs treatment.
Not ALL herding breeds have the sensitivity. Corgi's do not, GSD's do not, many of the others don't either. This is confirmed with DNA testing. Yes some do, I don't want to say the ACD's don't without checking first but I don't believe they are on the MDR1 list but better for someone who has one to check to make sure.
