Hi guys! well it has been more than a month since i had my chihuahua and i THINK she is getting the hang of it to go outside and potty. If I leave her in the house after pottying outside, she goes crazy! she even runs away from me and hide under furnitures. So I was wondering......should I let her loose in the house after she is fully potty trained and until then, keep her in the crate? What i'm trying to do is put her in the crate most of the time except when eating and pottying. Let me know :)
I wouldn't say that she's in the crate a lot because i let her loose in my backyard for awhile. It's just that she eats anything on the ground and rips thing if it catches her attention. Also, I did put her on a leash and let her wander in my room but she peed on the carpet. Any suggestions?
I'm not sure I understand the situation, but if the pup is in the crate all the time except to eat, go to the bathroom, and spend a little time in the backyard, it might be too much time confined.
Does the room you hang out in have carpet? If it doesn't, maybe she can hang out in the room you are in while you relax, watch TV...
What I used to do with my puppies when they were 5-6 months until they were fully potty trained, is closely supervise them when they were outside their playpen playing, so that I would catch them if the peed in the wrong place.
When they were really young, I would have them with me on my bed or couch, so I could spend time with them, but they couldn't get into mischief.
I agree that you can't keep her in the crate all the time except to eat, potty and play a bit in the backyard. This can cause behavior issues.
A crate should be a safe haven where a puppy wants to be. It should only be large enough for her to lay down and turn around and should be used for sleeping and when you are not home only.
When you are home, you will just have to be patient and consistent with her. Take her out frequently and 15-30 minutes after eating or drinking. Take her out when she starts "sniffing" the carpet. You can judge the inbetween times based on her age. 2 months, out every 2 hours, 3 months, out every 3 hours, etc.
Hope this helps and best of luck!

Two words: baby gate! You can buy them new for $10-$15 or find them even cheaper at places like Goodwill. Keep her confined to the room you're in. She'll have more freedom but won't be able to wander off and get into trouble. Pretty much the same concept as a leash, but easier IMO. I wouldn't recommend baby gates when you aren't around b/c many small dogs scale them and could get hurt.
