Dobie pup with 2 y/o GSD, good/bad?

My wife and I have a 2 y/o GSD and want to get another dog. We have decided on a Doberman. Now I have heard a few schools of thought with selecting a sex. Our GSD is a female and more affectionate towards me than my wife. Should we get a male puppy to balance out the pack? Please let me know what everyones opinions are.

My neighbor has a male Great Dane and he recently added a female Doberman. They get along great and are very protective of each other.

Always go with opposite sex when you have just one already. But if you plan on another down the road think carefully because dobes can be same sex aggressive and males often have other male aggression.

My dober boy is a saint, male female,cat,horse,pig he loves it. But many people are not so lucky. Meet the breeders dogs,see how they are with other dogs. There are some great dobe breeders out there and even more horrible ones! So be careful and good luck!

We have a female brittany, and when we got a 2nd dog, we got another female. They get along great-have never had ANY problems. Of course, that's not always the case-every situation and every dog is different.

Yeah, catlover, I know what you are saying about the females. I have 4 female Bostons in the house with no problems but I have to keep 1 male in the house and the others have to be in the kennels. [No fear, it's climate controlled and they basically have like their own little house and they love it.]

Go for a male. I have a male and a female (littermates) and the male is a mommy's boy, but the female is all about my husband. I've also found that female Dobermans tend to be more stubborn and dominant than males. At least that has been my experience. Of course, you have to take into account the personality of the dog you already have as well.

GSD, I spoke with my friend today and he said that Devlin (Great Dane), was about 2 years old when they added Prissy (Doberman) and they have not had any problems with them getting along. Devlin is very protective over Prissy and she is just a big ole baby!

Not a good idea to get another female, they might compete with each other over dominence and who gets talked to first by you, try to get a male, but if your worried about getting unwanted pregnencies, dont get another dog. Unless your GSD is very well soiclized, then you can go for another female.
