“If beagle prayers were answered, bones would rain from the sky. “
I've had to use a bark collar on one of my bassets. I don't particularly like using them, but I ran out of other options. I only used it when I was there to supervise it. He learned within 2 shocks to keep quiet. I kept in on him for another couple of weeks as a reminder.
How much exercise and play is your beagle getting? It sounds like he is very bored and that the boredom is causing a lot of the probelms you are having. Beagles and very high energy and very intelligent. They are also diggers and jumpers when they have nothing bettr to do.
Barking is a Beagle trait and one of the thing you have to learn to enjoy if you own the breed.
I do not believe in bark collars that deliver a shock. This is punishing the dog for what he does naturally....like putting one on your kids so they dont talk.
They do make collars that will spray citronella whenever the dog barks, this works for some dogs but not others. They also sell sound activated boxes that emit a high pitch tome that is an annoyance to dogs ears whenever they bark. Both of these are more humane than shocking.
if you didn't want barking, why did you get a Beagle? that is like saying you didn't want a big dog, but bought a lab. It just doesn't make sense. I am not sure you will win that battle even with a bark collar. Beagles are stubbern, and they are bred to bark. I like the spray collars, but don't believe in the shock ones. I think if your beagle has a shock one on, it will end up burning the dog, because the dog won't listen to it.
As far as getting out, they do dig alot. Was this dog given to you, or did you choose this breed? Not to be mean, but these questions would have been anwsered if you did a bit of research on the breed. There is not much you can do about the digging, It again is natural for them to do. I would suggest a dog walker during the day.
I use one for my mastiff rotty mix, but I have the remote collar so I give him the correction. So he knows he can bark at appropriate times, but running down the fence freaking out at every dog that walks by is not allowed. One of the biggest problems with him doing this, other than scaring the hell out of people is that he doesnt watch for the end of the yard and has broken through the fence head first.
Did it work, yes, was it my last resort, yes, do I use it all the time, nope.
I missed the part on escaping.......yea, good luck, Beagles are also notorious escape artists. Had you bought the dog from a reputable breeder you would have been informed of that small detail. They dig, they climb, they bay.
I have one that is a climber and will scale right over a 6 foot chain link fence. Our other is a digger and will go under anything to get out. The best solution is to bury fence around the perimeter of the fence from the outside angled inward and under/into the yard. Its that or concrete poured all around the perimeter so far in and out each way. lst resort is to only let them out when you can watch them at all times and catch them in the act before they get out. Once a beagle gets freedom, its tough to catch them, they go wherever their nose takes them and instantly go deaf at that point, lol.
Do you know it or not, I dont know but, there is a bark control collar available in the market which is not too costly. It is battery operated and works flawlessly. Our neighbour had bought a one which minimised the annoying barking of their dog.
Hope this will work. *
