I have a 19week old English Mastiff that I currently am giving Nutro Max Large Breed puppy food. I have heard alot about different brand of dog food and that certin brands are better then others. I am trying to find out what I should have him on for is breed. If anyone knows feel free to send me a message. I am also wondering what weight he shoudl be for his age as well??
There is no set weight for his age, it depends on his lines for the most part.
As for food you need him to grow very slowly, if you want to avoid joint and muscle issues. A low protein is best, lower than 24%, which rules out pretty much any puppy food. I personally dont like the nutro foods, some say they are good, though. I like California Natural lamb and rice, or herring and sweet potatoe. I know many many people who have wonderful healthy mastiffs with Raw feeding as well.
All dogs/puppies are different. You can't always go by what that particular breed is supposed to weigh. You need to look at your individual puppy. You should only be able to see the last 2 or 3 ribs if he's of a healthy weight. You should also be able to feel his ribs without pressing hard. However, remember that his ribs shouldn't be sticking out & you shouldn't be able to see every single one of them.
You should avoid foods that are too high in protein & fat, which can lead to pancreatitis. Foods that don't have ground corn as the first ingredient are usually pretty good.
I suggest you talk to your breeder! They should have the most experience with raising and owning giant breed dogs. If your dog didn't come from a responsible breeder, you can try contacting a better breeder who has the breed's best interest in mind.
