Hey guys, I just have a few questions about crate training my 12 weeks old West Highland White Terrier puppy. I crate Charlie during the day when he's taking naps and at night when he's sleeping (I don't usually put him in his crate while he's awake because he whines and disturbs the neighbors, but I have an area of the house where he can roam freely in case he has any accidents).
Now about crating him at night...usually I feed Charlie his last meal around 9 or 10PM, take him outside for 30-45 minutes, run him around to get his exercise and then bring him back home and put him in his crate to sleep. I provide water for him all day but I pick the bowl up at night BEFORE I take him outside. If I see he's thirsty after bringing him inside I give him an ice cube.
MY QUESTION IS...is it ok to just give him an ice cube after his last play time of the day...or should I provide more water for him? I have noticed when I have given him water he always got up in the middle of the night to want to go pee...but with the ice cubes he doesn't get up! Should I keep giving him the ice cubes or provide water for him and take him out in the middle of the night??
I would not be feeding the pup at 9 or 10 at night. I would give him his last meal at 6 or 7 possibly, and I would exercise him then too. I would make the latest potty break just that,a potty break before bed time. Since I don't believe in restricting water, I would be getting up once during the night with him. It depends somewhat on your work schedule as well, but in general, that's what I would do.Good luck with him!
