Ok, I went to the vet today and Max got his last parvo/distemper and first rabies shot. He just came up to me and wanted in my lap, I picked him up as I normally do by his sides somewhat under his front legs. He started yelling/screeching like he was hurting. The vet said he might be tired, but didn't say he would hurt that much to yell like that. Is it normal? He acted like I was pinching him or something but I wasn't. Any help would be appreciated. :D
that is not a typical vaccine reaction. "sometimes" there may be injection site pain but where you described touching him is not a normal place to administer a vaccine. a typical vaccine reaction includes hives, swelling of the face and neck, inability to breathe, lethargy, inappetance, and/or a fever.
how long has it been since he received the vaccines ?
He got them at about noon today and the vet gave him one in each side. He has been sleeping all day and not really wanting to walk. He seems to be pepping up a bit but still sore, I cant touch him on the side. If I act like I am going to touch him on his left side he moves and looks at me like im crazy. Atleast he is a bit peppy now. Right in time for bed!! YAY lol :D
it is normal for them to be sleepy after vaccines. not all dogs/cats are but they can be. as long as he isn't exhibiting any of the other signs, and is normal by tomorrow i think he will be fine. maybe in the future you could have his vaccines spaced apart a couple of weeks to minimize a reaction and also to determine which vaccine it is he is reacting too. good luck
Yeah, I actually didn't know he was getting the parvo shot today, that is why I decided to take him back 2 weeks after his initial check up for the rabies shot. The person we bought him from said he had just had shots so we didn't want to get the rabies shot so close to the others. Then when I get there he has two syringes. Since I haven't had a dog before now I just assumed it was rabies. Dumb on my part, I know.. but I can't do anything about it now. He is walking now which is good. He seems to be feeling a bit better. Hopefully he isn't so sore tomorrow. Thanks for your help :D
any inter-muscular injection has the potential to hit other stuff. bone? nerves? maybe even rupture a blood vessel causing soreness and pain. remember your last tetnus? ouch!!! i had to be almost dragged back for my booster. my daughter had a tooth in back filled and the shot hit a blood vessel and she looked like a domestic abuse vic. also much pain on the entire side of her face. good luck.
