I have a problem with my 3-month old westie. He eats his poo. But before, he doesn't.I really don't know what's wrong with him and i really don't know what to do. I really hope you could tell me why he does this and give me tips on how he could stop this bad habit. I really need your help.
It's really quite common so don't feel too worried. The best way to stop it is to take him out to potty,on a leash, and immediately scoop the poop. You can also add a small mount of canned pure pumpkin to his food, it's supposed to make the poop unpalatable (there's an oxymoron if I ever heard one!)Just be vigilant and scoop as much as you can. Good luck with the little guy.
It is also belived that lack of certain nutrients can cause this. What do you feed?
main way to deter it, is as Pen said, pick it up immediately. Also can add Accent seasoning to the food which is also suppose to make is taste bad to them, as if it shouldnt already taste like poop, lol.
They have powder sold at pet stores that also is made to stop the behavior...but remember, if you use one of these methods, you have to put the powder or whatever in the food of all the dogs you own.
Sometimes it is simple weird puppy behavior that corrects itself in time. They can be gross cant they? lol
Dont worry about all the questions, questions are good!
Canned pineapple be it crushed, chunks, whatever. If your dog will eat it, thats also an option. Meat tenderizer will be sold in the spice area of your store, most simply say 'meat tenderizer' on the label. Accent is a name brand spice and will likely cost more than the tenderizer, unless you already have it in your cupboard anyway ;)
A very common reason that dogs do this is because of the food they are getting. If you feed something with a lot of fillers in it, the dog gets full quicker. They do not absorb the protein and nutrients like they are supposed to. The food gets in the belly, swells up and they feel full quicker. Shortly after they eat, they poop and because the body has not had enough time to absorb the nutrients, the poop still smells like food. So, they eat it.
An easy way to determine if your pup is eating a quality food is to take a piece of the food and drop it into a bowl of water. If it swells to a larger piece, it contains a lot of fillers. The same thing happens when the food goes into the stomach. It swells to a larger piece, the dog feels full, they poop and it still smells like food. A premium food will actually dissolve into grains when dropped in water. They eat, it sits in the stomach longer and they absorb more of the protein and nutrients. When they poop, it is less and doesn't smell like dog food any longer.
While I say this is a very common reason, it is not the only reason. I have an 11 year old English Bully who was raised on Puppy Chow. To this day, he eats Complete Nutrition from Sam's Club, where I buy 50 pounds for about $17.00. He has never even looked at his poop much less eaten it. I have a 3 year old and a 1 year Boston who would eat any poop that was around, theirs or another dogs. I changed their diet, using a raw and kibble blend (Nutro Ultra) and this behavior has completely stopped.
You can try a diet change and do as previously suggested and just go out with a leash and pick up right away.
Hope this helps! Best of luck!
