I have a new dog, a mutt, corgi/ maybe chow mix. He's a great dog except at the dog park. he growls and SOMETIMES acts out at other dogs. Should I reprimand him or not? he"s just letting the other dogs know their boundaries, but the other dog owners get nervous. Should I reprimand him or not? He doesn't bite yet acts like he will.
If he has the chance, he will bite! Use extreme caution around other dogs. If he attacks, you will be held liable! Sounds like you need to seek out a trainer or someone who will work with him. In those first warnings, do not hesitate to correct. Good Luck
Contact a behaviorist. This dog should not be going to the dog park and allowed to play off leash. Any socializing you do, and socialization is very important, needs to be done under strict supervision on leash so that you can control the situation while training the dog.
This is not normal behavior. Your dog could be over stimulated, try taking it a bit slower for him. Usually dogs are more relaxed on neutral territory but it sounds like he is not very confident and this could result in a fear bite.
When asked what he would do if stranded on a deserted island with nothing but a cow in sight; "I would find out what the cow was eating and join him."
How old is he? Has he had any formal training/socialization? He could be protective of you, I have Chows and they tend to be protective by nature, but that DOES NOT mean they act like this in public. Your dog needs proper training, and corrective action when he acts out of line. But you have to do it the correct way or you will actually encourage the behavior. NEVER tell him "it's okay", tell him sternly "NO" when he acts act, seek a trainers advice ASAP, and good luck!
my dog park isnt too far we try to make it there once a week. but the best thing ever is a take a jug of water and a ball and i bring him to a baseball field. its a huge fenced in area its just me and him and he loves it. i eather go to school playgrounds after school areas or the local park. its a great way to let him excersise and play
