A normal pregnancy is 63 days. A dog can deliver up to 5days before, and up to 5 days after the normal 63 days. Has she had an x-ray yet? Do you know how many pups she is going to have? If not, you should do this asap. The fact that the male is bigger then the female can sometimes cause problems.
What works best for me, is I start taking my bitches temp. about 5 days early. If it is below 99 in the morning, check it again in a 2-3hrs. If it stays or continues to drop below 99 she will have the pups within 24hrs. if her temp goes back up above 99, then do it all over again the next day.
Know the signs of labor, and have an emergancy vet number handy. The fact that the dog was bigger then the female can increase the chances of needing a c-section. Good luck, and I hope all goes well.
Theres been no xrays on my dog :( I have been very ill myself , I am waring down by staying up all hours with her , theres been no contractions , or any other signs of labor . I have ATTEMPTED to take her temp , with no luck , even though Im bigger than she , she is stronger than me , and I am affraid if I force it , that it might hurt the babies with the way she rolls up on her tummy rolls , cries and yelps ,
Size of your female has no bearing on when she will give birth. I do not use temp for determining unless there is a specific reason for it. I know what signs to watch for and am here with them around the clock when they are close.
I hope you have done your homework on whelping, how to's, what to do, and what to watch for in case there is trouble.
We are delighted to let all know 8 babies were born very healthy this morning , momma and all babies are very well. I got the greast experience ever , I was able to help her delive the last one , my husband had gone to bed and it was just me , I think it was awesome . Thank you for all the replies to my question.
ive noticed if you put a heating lamp hovering far away from the box, kiddy pool, etc... it usualy makes them quiet down because their warmer. use some news paper in the box or what ever, its easy to clean up. :)
best of luck and dont forget at 6-7 weeks its time for their first shots...
