my name is enrique, i own a 2 year old shar pei standard male and a 2 year old shar pei female was given to me for breeding. the female just went on heat. first time i noticed was on the 7th of this month that her vag started to swell and looked like blood on it, i wiped it with a napking and sure enough it was having a redish discharge. the first tie i saw was on the 13th and i've seen 12 ties since the first on the 13th. what worries me right now is that my female started last night leaving small blood drops around the house, nothing big just droplets here and there. is this natural? this is the first time breeding so i really don't know about this issue. another question would be will she get pregnant with this ties? if so, when did she got pregnant being that all this started on the 7th and still the last tie i saw was about 30 minuts ago and her vag is still swollen. so how do i figure out her delivery? from when do i start counting the 63 days for delivery?
It is hard to say where the blood is comming from, but probably normal. The amount of ties you did were extremly unnessasary(sp?). As a breeder, I would suggest you seed a mentor, and someone to help you. a Normal breeder usually only does a couple of ties. The actual amount depends on the breeder and breed. I have done both breed skip a day, breed, skip a day, and one more breed if the bitch will accept. I have also done breed, breed, skip a day and breed. Anything more is really not needed. It is also possible for the male to run out of sperm if continually bred. I have seen it. Weather or not she is pregnant, and how many pups she will have is impossible to predict now. You need to count 63 days from the first tie.
I wish you luck, and please do the research it takes to become a good breeder.
Your female may stay swollen a couple of weeks after she stops accepting the male, illusionminis is correct however on giving you advice on over breeding. Your female should only need bred once per day every other day or every two days at most. Some females may need over the 2 or 3 ties, it may take 5 to 6x's depending on when she ovulates. Every female is different and you should keep a record of number of ties and dates as she will most likely follow the same pattern the next time. Sperm stays active inside a female for up to 7 days. The normal pregnancy for dogs is 63 days, start counting from the first tie and be prepared for delivery up to 7 days after her last accepting tie. Spot bleeding is normal for most breeds, usually the larger the breed the more blood you will see. Dripping continously, pooling or streaming is not normal the spotting should stop in a day or so if she has been in heat for the length of time you have stated, around 2 weeks of spotting or colored discharge is normal for most females.
12 ties is extreme and unecesarry! 2-3 ties is sufficient. One tie then skip a day. The sperm will survive and continue to fertilize for 48 hours in the female (not a week) hence the reason for breeding back to back days is not needed.
Please do alot of research on breeding and whelping.
