hi there i have a 6 year old german sheperd dog, chases his tail and bites it, did not used to do it that much before but now it is all the time, eg. when he is left in house, when i come home, even when i am talking to my next door neighbour over the fence, can someone please help me find out what is wrong with him
I agree with the above post. You always want to rule out any medical problem before you look further into behavioral issues.
If it is not a mediacl problem, this behavior sounds more like your dog is either bored, or is tring to get your attention, or a combination of both.
GSD's are a herding breed, and need a lot of exercise and attention. Your dog has figured he will get attention from you by chasing his tail. Whether it is you saying NO everytime, or you trying to stop him.
Give him ALOT of exercise, and if you see him chasing his tail, stop doing what you are doing at that time, and walk away totally ignoring him. Once he stops, wait about 5-10 minutes, go back up to him and play a game, fetch, tug a war, ect. Praise him when he plays and give treats.
Hopefully this will help.
Animals, what animals? My children just have alot of hair!
