4days ago, we adopted a 4mth female sharpei, unsocialised, not vaccinated. We confine her to kitchen. She's a subordinate dog.
1) she growls and tried to bite us when we reached out for her.(at pound she was alright) 2) she pee&poo at kitchen, toilet is her safe world. 3) SHE SCRATCHES THE DOOR (TO HALL) LIKE CRAZY AFTER SHE DOES HER BIZ OR WHEN NO ONE IN KITCHEN!! SHE'S BRINGING THE HOUSE DOWN WITH THIS.
a)Should we command her to stop when she scratches or not response. Its really stressing when she does this at night. We cant allow her access to hall as she aims to do her biz at our altar area.
b) how do we reverse her mentality to do her biz in the toilet. She learnt this from her pack.
In my opinion, if she is showing agressive behavior, I would take her back. Shar Peis can be agressive, although most are not. As with a lot of "guard" breeds, the badly bred ones can have agression issues. That is your choice
As far as the scratching at the door, I would try to hide. Everytime she scratches spray her with a spray bottle, and tell her no. The potty training is just going to take a lot of time and patience. she has to be treated like a 8wk old puppy, she really isn't far from it. Good luck
her ex-owner told us his other pups takes abt 2 wks to warm up to new owners. We met her sibling (adopted 2 mths earlier) and socialised, very friendly pup. We have considered returning or should we wait for another week?
It will not be possible to spray her when she's scratching, as we'll be at the hall. If we're inside kitchen with her, she wont scratch but jus sit at a corner.
Then either crate her or try and x-pen. A non-socialized dog can be difficult to deal with as an older dog. If she is going to be agressive and bite you for 2wks are you ok with that? That is the real choice. What about if you take her for a walk, will she be aggressive to strangers?
You have a puppy, you have to puppy proof your home. When you can't watch them, you are supposed to keep them from harm. Both harm to them and harm to your home. How often do you let her out of the kitchen? Is it possible she is just wanting attention or some playtime, chewies, etc? The most important training time for a puppy is between 0-16 weeks. Not saying a older dog can not learn new tricks, but it takes longer and harder work. Obediance is a wonderful start.
Where did you say you got this dog? 1st post you said you adopted her and she 'didnt act like that at the pound' 2nd post you said her ex-owner has had other pups that act like this....thia makes me think you got it from a breeder???
And, no you will not be able to get the dog to do her 'biz' in the toilet. Train her to go outside.
my apologies for the confusion, i used the word 'pound' which is actually a pet supply shop that puts animals up for adoption or rehome. The ex-owner passed his 2 puppies to the shop for adoption as he still has 2 adults and 1 pup at home. On the adoption night, the ex-owner was around and spoke to us about the temperament of our adopted puppy.
We are using tiny treats to encourage her to come to us and today she is more confident. We also bought a pet gate so that she can see us in the hall.
Thank you for the concern, we will certainly not put up with her if her aggression continues but is trying to see if its her lack of trust in us will improve. She is by nature not aggressive, but she's frighten.
I cant bring her down for walk yet as a)she's not vaccinated and b)we cant touch her yet.
