I have a chesapeke bay retriever that has a constant horrible odor. This in our sceond chessie and our first one had the same problem. His is a house dog so this presents constant challenges for us. We have a swimming pool which he swims in everyday and we bathe him on a regular basis but he still stinks! We have a spray that deodorizes him when we bring him back inside. We brush him everyday which he loves. Is this just something that is in the breed or is there a problem? Are there any suggestions on what to do to get rid of the odor? Thanks! JayeJae

I can almost pin-point that it's the pool. My Bostons love to play in ours but they stink so bad afterwards. I have kiddie pools on the concrete for them - no chemicals.

We live in AL and our pool is closed already for the season. Way too cold for my BTs to want to be in. If you use shock in your pool and chlorinator tablets, that strips a dogs natural oils and does cause a foul odor; or at least it does in mine.

I bathe in blue Dawn dishwashing liquid and that's all I have ever used. It really does wonders for their coats as well as odors.

Thanks for the help and suggestions. My vet did say it was probably the swimming pool. He was not familiar with the breed so he didn't know if it was a characteristic of the double coat. He has no skin problems so I guess we have our answer and, Oh well you can forget it! As anyone who has owned a Chessie knows, they will swim at all costs and all tempertures. We live in Louisiana and we do not close out pool. It is open and balanced all year so he has free will when he it outside to get in it and I can promise you that is the first place he heads when the door is opened.He is a gundog and wonderful companion for my husband and son on many a hunting trips. He will fetch a duck in water when it is below freezing and will do it with a smile on his face. We will continue to combat the odor because he is so worth it and I guess it is a trade off for owning such a wonderful breed. The deorderizing spray does the job and is not harmful to his beautiful coat.
