My Maltese is just over a year old and has been eating her poo for some time now. I've read that by feeding dogs pumpkin it will help break them of that habit. I started feeding her pumpkin with her dry food about two weeks ago but she's still eating her poo. Now I've resorted to pineapple. I work all day and I can't watch her all day (she has a doggie door because I have five dogs). What else can I do?
I would suggest putting her on a feeding schedule so that she's more likely to defecate when you are home. That way you can pick it up. I have a 10 year old Maltese that goes in the morning and is done for the day. There are many additives you can try but it seems like cleaning up immediatly is the only 100% effective way.
there is something you can sprinkle on their food that they dont like and will stray away from in i use it on my dogs and there is more for me to clean up now lol not that it makes them go more it stops them from getting a second helpng lol its pretty cheap you can get it at walmart or any pet store.
Is she very underweight even though you feed her well? If so, have the vet check for pancreatic dysfunction. If the pancreas doesn't work, the dog doesn't get anything from the food and is basically in starvation mode. In starvation mode a dog will naturally eat poo as a desperate effort for nutrition. It tends to be hard to diagnose. It is remedied by special enzymes that must be put on the food and heated before the dog eats the food-- enzymes that the pancreas SHOULD be producing but isn't.
Not saying that this is the problem but it is one reason that well-fed dogs can be malnourished and eating poo.

I had this problem before and after a complete examination and test by my vet she was found to have nothing wrong with her and my vet said sometimes they do it for no reason at all, they just like to do it. Just a bad habit.
