I just got my shetland 6months ago, he is now 1 year old. We have been having alot of problem with his behaviour. He is very much into biting game when we try to pat him. He will nibble on our hands, occasionally when excited, he'll snap. Another worst problem we have is that he will chew on everything he can get! I bought toys for him to chew but eventually. he starts reaching to things like: Spectacles, remote controller, etcs. Everything within his reach will be destroyed in no time. To stop him, i have to chase him down the house but he will wag his tail as though it's fun. I really need some advise on how to train my dog, dont wish to send him for a discipline school.
You are going to have to back to the basics, and treat him like he is an 8 week old puppy on the biting issue. You can try a bitter spray on your hands if you want. I prefer not to because it's a pain to keep washing it off.
His nipping at you is a game for him, and he wants to play, but it sounds like it is going to far. His snapping sounds like a dominance behavior. You have to make him know you are the boss, and biting is a no no.
Everytime he even wants to play bite with you, and starts nipping at your hands say "NO" and turn your back and ignore him for 5 minutes. After that, play a game with him. Tug o War is great, but play it right, and teach him to let go of it when you say so. You win 50% of the time. You can also redirect him with a bone or treat to leave you alone.
On the chewing issue, you are going to have to keep everything out of his reach. Give him flavorful bones. They love the stinky ones, the stinkier, the better lol. I personally love bully sticks and pig ears. They are all natuural, but can be a little messy, so keep an eye on him.
Animals, what animals? My children just have alot of hair!
