I am new to this board. I really need some help. I have been dealing with my poor shih tzu Lucky who is only 5 years old. I had to rush him to the VCA Emergency Animal Hosp. at 2:00 a.m. this morning because of his not wanting to walk/yelping high pitch like he was in pain. We have been trying to figure out why he has open sores that do not heal all over his body. He has lost weight (2lbs) which is a lot for a little dog who is usually 12 lbs or so. He was eating though thank goodness and I started to work with a new vet who is very good but it may have been too late with this new problem of Lucky not walking and yelping. I admitted him to the animal hosp. and are having a neurologist and dermatologist look at him. He has been under care for about 2 months for this problem which I get "I don't know" and charged $200.00 bucks later! My new vet is unfortunately closed today so I can't speak with him right now. I switched from the other vet last week because they did not know and I felt like I was just another "cha'ching" money and no answers. I am so distressed right now. Has anyone heard of this from the rabies vaccine? I had noticed these things after that vaccine (about 2 weeks later) in which my "old" vet said "oh no it wouldn't take 2 weeks for a reaction". Any kind of info. would be welcome. Thanks much.
I'm so sorry about your little guy and hope you get things figured out soon. What sort of things have been ruled out? It sounds like possibly an autoimmune disorder may have been triggered and Shih-tzu's can be prone. Have you tested for things like hemolytic anemia, immune- mediated thrombocytopenia, coombs or maybe even lupus? What about any indications of a thyroid disorder as well? If you haven't yet I would maybe try looking in that direction.
