i am looking for any help/advice/history on litter training our 12 wk old lhaso apso. We just brought our 12 wk female lhaso apso home from pet store. I happen to be home from work these next 4 days. I believe that litter training is our best option 1. we are off to work 7am to 4pm, 2. minnesota winters are horrible. I have put a crate in our kitchen this is her bed. Then I blocked off a small area in our bathroom in this area I have laid down a blanket for her to lay/sleep on, her litter box is in here. This is also where we will feed & water her. does anyone have any suggestions should I be doing something different with her setup? She has been home with me all day these last 2 days she has done well going in the litter box when I bring her there. i am concerned a. what the routine should be when I go back to work (leave her crated or leave her in the small blocked off area in bathroom) Any input would be appreciated. We years ago owned a cocker spaniel and could not get it trained. We are trying very hard to do right things this time.
You're doing things right in terms of litter box training. However, Iwould get another litter box and put it beside the existing one. The reason is, dogs won't urinate or defecate in the same spot so if he's gone in the litter box a couple of times, he may go outside of the litter box. So getting another one would give him more options without killing your floor. Trust me, my carpet knows!
In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semi human. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog. ~Edward Hoagland
