We have never had a dog but I think we're ready for one. We live in a townhouse, with a small fenced yard, but with a lot of open space around us. We spend a lot of time outside. It's me (mom) and a 14-yr old daughter, and 2 boys - ages 3 & 4; and 2 cats. I prefer a larger dog that will be happy indoors as well as outdoors. We want a dog that will fit our lifestyle and be happy as part of our family. I don't want to adopt a puppy just because it's free, although this is a major selling point :) .
We have an opportunity to adopt a Malamute/Black Lab/Pit mix puppy. The little I've learned about this mix so far is that it will most likely grow to be rather large and very strong. My concerns are focused on... how this dog is likely to get along with the kids, how much exercise would probably be required (high/med/low), indoors/outdoors dog?
And finally I've heard the nightmare stories about Pit Bulls - am I correct in assuming that these dogs become vicious and attack people because of the way they are trained, or are Pit Bulls naturally difficult to control? Should I avoid this dog simply because of the Pit it has in it? Or is that my ignorance causing this concern?
Any feedback from more experienced dog lovers would be appreciated! Thank you so much!
Getting a mix like that it will be hard to say but I can speak a little about Malamutes. They are outstanding dogs, but usually prefer to be outside, and get very large. Ours dug a huge hole in the back yard as his place to lay in the summer to cool off, and used in the winter also, he loved to burrow in the snow. We had a decent size backyard, but not huge, and he was happy, but did not like to be inside. And he ate a lot of food, which leads of course of a lot of mess to pick up outside. Ours was good with everyone including children, and loved to run. Good luck!
