My 12 wk old lhaso apso is having a fit in its crate, she is pawing at the door whining/barking do i sit here and ignore her or go get her out. She shouldnt have to "go" she went before I crated her. But she has been in crate throwing this fit for 45 minutes! Should I give in and get her out?
If you are letting the dog out to go potty, and she is going, then the dog is just trying to get you to open the door. You do have to train them a bit to be calm in the crate. I do this with a toy king and some Peanut butter. I potty the dog, put the stuffed kong in the crate...then go get dog, and let them in. I never fight with a dog to go in a crate, shove or push them. I always use a piece of food or a kong. This is to prevent conflict and a bad association with the crate. When the dog does enter it will find the kong. start snacking and be totally distracted...after that. If the dog is crying, usually what I do...is pick up the crate and put it somewhere where I cannot hear them. I do this because the crying annoying, and I want the dog to learn being in the crate in the house, is better than being in the crate in the truck...but no matter what that door is not going to open. I have smacked the door of the crate, and said be quiet....I have also stood crates up on thier back with the door to the sky...the lesson is...Crying only makes things worse. not better.
I believe a dog's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment he holds dear, is when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle-with a ball in his mouth."
I have my crates in a spare bedroom. I pick up puppy and put them in the crate then give treat and kong. I don't give them the chance to not want to go in. If they cry I just ignore them. I have also put a blanket over the crate like you would a bird. That works well depending on the dog. I always make sure pup is pottied and played with before bed time. They cry usually the first couple of days and that is it. I shut the bedroom door if I have to, but never let pup out.
It just takes time and patience. they will settle down
