me and my 3 year old daughter was outside and she was playing and our great dane attacked her for no reason she had to have 3 stitches in her back it took me and my neighbor to get him off of her.i have the same question why did this happen our dane loved kids.
So sorry to hear about your daughter. I hope she is doing well. It's so heartbreaking when things like this happen. As mentioned I would take him to a vet to rule out anything physical as the cause. I personally would not be comfortable with that living arrangement anymore if you don't know the reason behind the attack. I also have a large dog, and it is a constant battle to keep him and the kids separate, but it's completely necessary since he's still a puppy and doesn't realize his size and strength. I fully anticipate him calming down, but I wouldn't want to face a life time of keeping them completely separate, which you may have. Best of luck, hopefully its something that can be explained.
Actually, I just want to say too, that you shouldn't ever leave any child and any dog alone together, no matter the circumstances. I am not saying you did that, I just wanted to clarify my post (for anyone that may be reading it) that I wasn't saying that it was ever okay to do that. If you find time, let us know what you found out at the vet. I'm curious if it was anything wrong with him (like an ear infection or whatever).
NOT saying this is the case but did your child provoke him in any way? A neighborhood boy used a stick to chase a dog and it attacked him and there was a big uproar about the whole situation and when the boy came out of surgery...(it was BAD), he said he was trying to whop the doggie with the stick like daddy did. Again, I'm NOT at all saying that this is your situation but sometimes children can seem threatning to animals and their instinct is to attack for protection.
I agree that he may have some underlying medical situation. I'll also reiterate that children and pets should be supervised and hopefully a different arrangement can be made.
I hope your child is ok and everything works out.
