Hi All, I have a 19 month old male German Sheperd Dog.. He got a hold of a baked ham bone and ate most of it before I found out he got it out of the trash. He had a normal BM this morning but a while later tried again and nothing came out but a small pellet of yellow stuff. He acted like he still had to go, hunched over and trying, but nothing happened. He has been licking his behind like it's sore. I have given him water with a little milk in it to make sure that he stays hydrated and he has been peeing ok. He still has an appetite for his favorite treats, but not regular food. I am 90 minutes away from the nearest Vet and they are not open at night. Please, has anyone had this happen before? Has anyone tried the cotton ball remedy? He has a hard belly, sometimes, like after he tries to go to the bathroom. I know he will have to see the Vet, but is it ok to wait until morning and is there any possibility this could resolve itself? Thank you and sorry for the long post.. Cheyz
Time to see your vet, you'll need professional help with this one. Sounds like an obstruction, the bone is probably lodged somewhere in the bowels.
Could tear, cause inflammation, kill several feet of bowel due to trauma, could even cause such a build up it ruptures.
Surgical relief is necessary, your pet will be hospitalized. If left untreated, it will be fatal. It will not be a pleasant passing either, my sisters puppy passed from an untreated obstruction because; "she didn't have the money or a ride to take him in."
