We're looking to get a dog for our family and I need suggestions on which breeds we should consider. I have a two year old and we're hoping to have more children soon. We have a fenced backyard and room inside for our pet. I would like a dog that's good with kids, sociable with other dogs, and one with minimal shedding. I have grown up with mini dachshunds and love them, but I don't feel they're a good fit for small children. I tend to be drawn to smaller/medium hound breeds, as well as some terriers. Labs and Golden's seem to be too big with too much hair. Suggestions please?
I hate to say it, but MUCH prefer the larger (yes shedding) breeds with small children. They are more able to take the rough and tumble that toddlers dish out.
As a dog owner, it is p to you to socialize the pup. Walks, visits to dog parks, friends bringing over their furkids, trips to the pet supermarket, etc.... Just make sure the pup is immunized first.
Remember, no matter what breed you choose, you're going to have things to deal with. ALL dogs with hair shed. Terriers are VERY energetic, hounds tend to be VERY vocal..... A visit to the local shelter with your 2 year old will help you see how the child and various breeds/sizes interact would prove very helpful.
Good luck on your search!

There are a number of good terriers and small dogs that are great with kids helped by their small size, but there are also plenty of big dogs including retrievers, some labs. While every dog is different and highly influence by how it is raised and trained, there are some generalizations that can be made. This friend fetcher tool on petcentric may be of use to you.
