Seeking some advice/solutions for excessive outside barking by beloved male rattie(9 yrs old) with no other negative habits except (somewhat recent) exessive barking at squirrels, and sometimes other larger dogs when on leash. Main concern is continued barking when out side in enclosed area (or inside when he can see then) every time a squirrel appears...which is cotinuous in our NC area at this time...once barking commences, it is hard for him to stop--just continues on if he "perceives" the 'squirrel' might be there... any thoughts about the use of a "bark collar" ( has worked extremely well on another, much larger, noisier dog in the neighborhood--who is just delightful & friendly--and does not bark at all wile wearing is collar!) Feedback, etc will be much appreciated so a good decision can be made for our beloved (but overly noisy!) rattie!
Your dog is doing extactly what is was bred to do. If this is unwanted behavior, you should have considered another breed. This is where the research should have been done first. Personally using a bark collar on a dog doing what it was bred to do is cruel, and may not work well. It could possible just burn(shock) you dogs neck, or destroy(spray) the nasal senses.
Teach the dog "quiet", or "no bark". Use a spray bottle with water, you can add a bit of white vinager is water doesn't work. Everytime he barks spray him and use whatever commend you choose.
Don't leave him outside unattened, they are diggers as well, and one day he may decide to dig under, or jump the fence after that squirrel. Once locked on it, a street and cars are absolete, and he wont pay attention.
