Hi -- Yes, we have a 3 year old male Siamese who is an intense paper eater. It started with him chewing on paper, then actually eating it. Over time, his menu has expanded from simple plain paper, to magazine covers, calendar pages...even money!
I wish I could give you some encouraging advice, but we have not been able to figure out how to "cure" this. We added some fiber to his diet (check w/your vet about how much), as some people say the paper eating is a sign of low fiber. But, in our case, it hasn't helped. We have also given him some rawhide bones to chew on, and this seems to help a bit. Be sure to use the kind that don't flake off into big pieces, as this can cause a choking hazard.
Someone else posted a response to you that the paper probably won't hurt your cat. However, I don't agree. Paper is made from a lot of chemicals that are not meant to be consumed....not to mention the inks. Over time, who knows how these toxins will build up and impact health. Essentially, we just try to keep paper away from him....which is easier said than done. We've made extensive use of clear vinyl sheets, which we lay on counter tops, dressers....anywhere we might want to leave an occasional note or reminder.
Good luck with your problem. You can get a glimpse of my little guy on Youtube (just type in "Jumble and Jivey").
Wow. Our pup loves to chew up paper, but I hadn't heard of a cat actually eating it.
I find it hard to believe that this would be due to a deficiency in fiber intake. What is the expected fiber intake of a feline in the wild? Almost nil. Unlike dogs, cats digestive systems are really set up to be exclusively carnivores. And just because the popular brands of commercial cat food contain "healthy vegetables" that doesn't mean that's what's best for the cat -- it's just what works in marketing.
What our cat (9 yo Siamese) really loves is to eat grass. (Her intake goes down during the winter months while the grass is under a foot of snow, though.) Nothing I've read makes a conclusive case about why cats want to eat grass. For ours, eating grass almost always results vomiting. The grass she eats almost never has a chance to make it her intestines.
Could the taste for paper be quenched by an indoor patch of grass?
