Hi everone i'm new here, has anyone any suggestions on removing the odour around the eyes. My shih tzu eyes weep and smell so badly it only happens in the summer months.I've bought stuff from pet shops but they don't work.I'd appreciate any tips.
you could have her checked for allergies since it only happens in the summer.
Unfortunatly most long haired dogs eyes tear, it is part of there natural body to keep things from there eyes. You can take a damp cotton ball, and wipe her eyes several times a day. That should keep the tearing on her hair at a min. The smell is possibly a yeasty fungus, they grows in damp conditions (otherwise known as yeast infections).
I would contact the vet and make sure there is not an underlying condition making them smell. The tearing should not cause a bad oder unless it is being left for long periods of time to build up.
Routine washing (1-2 times daily) with an tear stain wash or other optical solution. Also she may have allergies and the vet can give you a slave to put in her eyes to help. There is a product called Angel eyes that is added to their food and eliminates tear stains.
Thanks for all the tips, i tell my vet about the smell and she says thats nomal for a shihtzu cause of their squished faces and to wipe them with a solution of water and salt but that lasts for a short while then they weep and smell again.I'll try some of your suggestions.
Hi my name is Jackie Cole. I am a Professional Dog Groomer 15 years and going strong. I would like to add, about the smelly eyes on your shih tzu. If it hasn't been mentioned, you also need to keep the hair trimmed on the bridge of their small nose. If it gets too long, the discharge from the eyes, will collect in the hair and of course get stale after awhile! So, keep the hair trimmed, and keep that area dry. *********** Is the discharge from the eye yellow or green? This could be a sign of infection. Look at the eyeball itself, check for ulcers.
