We recently adopted an 11 month old Boerboel. She is well trained, fun to be around, and gorgeous looking. The previous owners told us both she and her sister were always shedding their hair. Here it is in the middle of winter, and she is shedding as if it were summer. Even if you pet her, you come away with a handful of hair. She is brushed regularly but it does not seem to help. We are experienced large breed dog owners. There was not any problem with our Cane Corso Mastiff or our Bullmastiff when we had them. Just the regular cycle of shedding dogs will have. Can anyone help us on this topic? Other than this shedding, she is in terrific health. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I am not familiar with this specific breed, but wanted to throw some things out there. Is the coat/skin in goo condition? Dry or flaky, dandruff, etc?
Some dogs do shed year round. However even the short coated breeds will shed to some extant all the time. Out with the old, in with the new. Not even a short coated dog will have a point that NONE of the hair comes out when petted, just tends to slow at times.
If the coat wa in less than great shape when you got it, and you have upgraded food quality, etc...very possible he is shedding out the damaged coat while the healthier coat grows in.
If none of this is the case, look at the food quality he is being fed. If it is a lower quality food, good chance that is why. Try upgrading food or adding oils of some sort to the food. Fish oil, raw egg weekly, linatone, etc.
The Vet I work for told me to try 2 tbsp of Canola oil on her food. Mine sheds all the time also, my dark wood floors always have a layer of her hair all over them. I am going to try this, if anyone has tried Canola or some other oil and it's helped please let me know!!!!
Any type of Omge 3 & 6 will improve coat condition. The canola oil will do it, sunflower oil, olive oil, fish oil.
You can go to WalMart and buy fish oil capsules and give him one a day. Salmon oils. Wal Mart also has a bottle of liquid oil in the vitamin section that can be used as well as the many products specifically made for dogs coats.
