Does any one know of a 10 year old dog that has never been house broken? Well my uncle who is a 90 year old man, has never trained his beloved dog to go outside, only on paper. She a Cocker spaniel, well taken care of, and she will be given to me due to my uncle passing away. I have a 7 year old mixed lab, and I'm hopeing she will follow him, but he's a leg lifter, will she still learn from him? I have time to take her out doors, and we have snow though, I'm thinking of trying every hour, w/ my labby, to see if she catches on, but having my doubts...Any advice I can get would be so helpfull..thanks! I will not give up on her! but peeing in the house on paper sounds like allot of newspaper subscriptions..;) and she was given the best..N.Y post!
Sure, I think its possible. Depending too, though, on the individual dogs health and mobility too.
If there is a any incontinence issues you may have trouble getting her to hold it long enough to get to the door and signal you. If she has limited mobility then that may also cause problems with any steps, snow, etc.
I would treat it as if shewere a new puppy. Potty often and use your already trained dog to go out with her. You may be surprised how fast she catches on. Many dogs will learnt to mimmick the other dog. Also by placing her outside very frequently and priasing her like mad, that alone in time may be all thats needed. No one can say with 100% certainty that she will be able to be trained or be 100% relaible, but doesnt hurt to try.
Are you okay with it if she is never able to convert and hs to remain with newspapers?
