Sorry i have so many posts about her but ive never done this before with a chihuahua and the people on this post all seem very nice and helpful and most importantly experienced. ok heres my new question... my chihuahua is 57 days pregnant today (1-29) and her temp is in the 98.3 degree range. ive read online that when the temp drops they will have babies w/in 24 hours but the only problem i have with this theory is during her whole pregnancy her temp is in the 98-99 degree range. my vet said she just has a lower temp so i cant really go by temperature to know when to expect her to deliver. (unless you think since this is around her normal temp that it might go down to like 97 or so...i dont know) her belly is huge and ive noticed its dropped some and her vagina seems like its a little swelled. she hasnt been panting or nesting and the pups are going crazy in her belly moving around. my question is besides a temp drop what signs can i look for to know when she might be having them within 24 hours. i know panting and digging and hiding and all that but any other signs that anyone knows of? thanks so much for all the help and patience with all my questions!!!!!!
i forgot to add that shes been very clingy to me, wanting to be with me as much as possible, in bed, under the computer desk,in the bathroom...all of it, ever since the 1st day i brought her home so her being clingy or needy wouldnt be anything new eather.
one more thing(sorry i just want to add as much as possible) she is sleeping alot lately but not hiding out. she stays asleep in the living room when we are all in here.(me and my 3 kids) when i go to bed she follows. she isnt secluding herself at all. once in a while shell go on my kids bed and sleep but shes back out with us shortly there after
Let me just start by saying I have never bred a litter of pups so I may be off on this but I think from what i have heard from people who do this, she may lose her appetite the day of delivery. 57 days is early but not unheard of. It is usually around 62 days that they deliver. The temperature thing is usually the best guideline, but if it is low in the AM and normal in the PM than you have to continue checking it until it is low for 24 hrs straight. Her clinginess may also be a sign.
yes we did xrays yesterday. they said she has 4 possibly 5 in there and they look small enough to fit through her birth canal so hopefully we are good in that aspect but im going to be with her the entire time just incase.
I have had three litters of pups in the past five years. My bitch always stops eating about five hours before delivery. She delivered on day 62 or 63 all three times. They will "nest" a few hours prior to birth, by digging at blankets, wanting to be outside and dig a hole, etc. She will be very restless. I hope she has a welping box or a place that is hers to keep her young safely in. She will have contractions for a couple of hours prior to delivery, generally. Birth is such a great experience, but you have been through that with Pit Bulls, correct? Are you prepared with a bulb aspirator to clean their mouths and noses, hemostats to clamp the cords, sterile scissors to cut the cords, flavorless dental floss to tie off the cords, gauze and betadine to clean the umbilical cord, and I use a special puppy heating pad to keep them warm. Pups can die from being too cool and cannot regulate their body temperature until 10 days of age.
yeah i have a complete whelping kit all ready and waiting. yes i used to breed pitbulls and they were the perfect example of temp dropping and giving birth and i never had any problems breeding any of them but ive never had any small dogs pregnant and i havent whelped a litter in years so im hoping it all comes back(like riding a bike...lol) i noticed when i took her temp tonight that she had a little bit of mucas (looked like a little bit of ky jelly, not a string of it, literally like someone just globbed some ky on her privates........... in the years i bred pitbulls only one of them had a mucas plug come out that i actually saw but it was a long and gooey stringy where hers is just like jelly. plus my pit gave birth 3 hours after losing it. where this chihuahua is sleeping alot but pretty much acting normal. i give a round of applause to people who breed small dogs cause ive been nothing but a worry wort since the day i got her. this is absolutely my last time i get to experience a birth cause shes getting spayed after the pups are weaned unless she needs a csection then ill jsut have it done then. shes on day 59 on sunday so i dont know if i should expect to be up all nite tomorrow or when. i guess you could say even though i havent owned her that long ive fell in love with her and ive become one of those annoying 100 question asking people but everyones help is appreciated.
it is possible that is her mucus plug, and she could go last night or today. My dogs usually start labor a few hours after losing that plug. That is when they really start digging and nesting. I have been lucky with my mini aussies, they are easy whelpers, and it is so easy to know with them. Good luck, and let us know
this morning she was whining a little (not for a couple hours now though) and shes lying around almost like she doesnt feel good. shes licking herself but just her legs and her belly right behind her armpit. anytime i ever bred the bigger dogs, as soon as the whining started out came pups but she isnt doing anything now but jsut lying there. could she still maybe be in stage one? any ideas? my vet said just keep an eye on her but any suggestions would help put me at ease...maybe/hopefully
PS... ive put her in her whelping box a million times but she insists on being on my bed and wont stay in the box and is digging a little at my pillow. i think she wants to have them on my pillow even though this isnt very ideal for me but its replaceable so should i keep putting her in her whelping box and make her stay there or let her just pick a spot she feels comfortable at? i dont want to delay her birth by stressing her out. thanks
